Carlisle Patriot - September 1st 1855

***An ordination will be held by the Bishop of Carlisle on Sunday the 23rd September.

***The Earl of LONSDALE left Lowther Castle on Friday last for London.

***Lieutenant-General Sir George BROWN is still residing with Lady BROWN and family at Leamington Spa.

***It is arranged that her Majesty and the Royal family will leave town for Balmoral, on Thursday, the 6th of September, by the great Northern Railway. Her Majesty will pass a night at Holyrood on her way.

NAWORTH.

The hon. Charles HOWARD, M. P., is at present staying at Naworth Castle, enjoying the sport of grouse shooting on the neighboring Moors. He is accompanied by his only son, Master George HOWARD, and there have been visiting him, since his arrival, Mr. HOWARD of Greystroke, Mr. JERVIS, Mr. and Mrs. GRENFELL, (the latter a daughter of the late Hon. W. S. LASCELLES, and niece of the Earl of Carlisle); and also there have been, and still are, on a visit to the Hon. Charles, Mr. and Mrs. William LOWTHER and their infant son.

NEWCASTLE INFIRMARY.

W. B. BEAUMONT, Esq., M. P., of Bywell Hall, in addition to a former donation of 250 guineas, has just given £100 to the building fund of the Newcastle Infirmary.

CUMBERLAND MILITIA.

Commissions signed by the Lord Lieutenant of the County of Cumberland. - Royal Cumberland Regiment of Militia. - Joseph FITZPATRICK, William HAMM, gent, to be ensign; Joseph MILLER, Harrington, gent., to be Ensign, vice POTTS, resigned.

The Earl and Countess of Derby, and Lady Emma STANLRY, arrived at Gordon Castle on Saturday on a visit to the Duke and Duchess of Richmond.

The Bishop of London has presented the Rev. Derwent COLERIDGE, Prebendary of St. Paul’s, and Principal of St. Mark’s College, Chelsea, to the Vicarge of Northbolt, vacant by the preferment of the Rev. W. G. HUMPHRY, to the Vicarage of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Partridge shooting commences on Monday next. Brids are plentiful in most places.

GENERAL LICENSING DAY FOR CUMBERLAND.

The annual general meeting for granting licenses for the sale of spirituous liquors in Cumberland Ward is fixed for the 5th instant, at the Court House, Carlisle, at 12 noon.

BALLINASLOE FAIR.

It is stated that the Earl of Carlisle - who appears resolved to leave no nook or corner in the country unvisited - means to honour with his presence the great annual fair of Ballinasloe in October next.

MR. WILLIAM J. COX.

Mr. William J. COX, of Annan having studied at Glasgow University and Theological Academy, has accepted the unanimous invitation of the Congregational Church, Richmond Place, Edinburgh, to be co-pastor with their present minister, the Rev. Henry WIGHT.

Sir George BROWN has refused an offer of 1,100 guineas for the grey hunter which carried him at the battle of the Alma. Old Grey Conqueror (now in Cumberland), is said to be the sire of the grey hunter.

A son of the Prince of Canino, Lucien BONAPARTE, is to receive a Cardinal’s hat at the next Consistory. It will be more singular than improbable if the present generation one day behold a BONAPARTE - Pope of Rome..

The King of Sardinia will shortly pay a visit to the Queen of England.

Another first class ship of the line, to be called the Howe, is to be built at Pembroke Dockyard; she will class with the Marlborough, Royal Albert and the Duke of Wellington, and will be considerably larger than the latter vessel.
