FATAL ACCIDENT.

(Before Mr. LEE, Deputy Coroner.)

On the 27th instant, at Saddle Inn, Caldewgate, on the body of James ROUTLEDGE, a waggoner, in the employ of Mr. BELL, timber merchant.

On the previous Saturday afternoon he went to Dalston for timber with a wagon drawn by three horses, accompanied by two others. Deceased and his fellow drivers appear to have been drinking freely at Dalston, and remained there till late in the evening. Deceased was driving the lead wagon.

At about half past seven they reached Shaddongate, where the sewerage works are progressing. The watchman set the deceased past the cutting, and returned to assist the other parties. In doing so he heard the deceased crack his whip, and the horses immediately proceeded at a quicker pace.

A young woman came up and saw deceased endeavoring to stop the shaft horse, when his foot slipped, and both wheels on the near side passed over his legs and body and killed him upon the spot.

“Accidental death.”
