Death - HARRIS Print E-mail
Carlisle Patriot - September 1st 1855
COCKERMOUTH.

We regret to have to announce the death of Mr. Jonathan HARRIS, jun., of Papcastle, near Cockermouth, which took place at his residence on Wednesday evening, after an illness borne with exemplary fortitude and Christian resignation.

Mr. HARRIS’s success as a merchant, and the unimpeachable character he bore gave him an enviable position in the community to which he belonged, whilst the encouragement he has afforded to every local improvement for the last twenty years will cause him to be remembered with affection, gratitude and respect.

He was one of the founders and a liberal and constant supporter of the Mechanics Institute at Cockermouth, and had always assisted at every movement for the amelioration of the social and physical condition of the people. As a member of the Society of Friends Mr. HARRIS objected on principle to war, but he did not carry his “conscientious scruples” (as some advocates of peace) to the length of closing his ears and pockets against the cry of the widows and orphans of his brave countrymen who have fallen in the fray, but, unsolicited, sent a cheque for 20 guineas to the Local Committee for the National subscription to the Fund for that patriotic purpose.

The deceased gentleman was in his 47th year, and has left a young family to mourn his premature death.
