ASSAULT. James ROUTLEDGE, a young man with only one arm charged Charles GRAHAM and Robert MORLEY with having assaulted him, at Newtown, on Sunday last. GRAHAM did not appear. The complainant deposed that he was employed to guard the sewerage fires at nights. On Sunday night the defendants came up to him near the Infirmary and interfered with the fires. He interposed, when they threatened him, and asked what he had to do with the fires? He replied that he was set there to mind them, and would let them know that GRAHAM then struck at him, although he had only one arm. He attempted to go for a policeman, but both defendants prevented him for a time by “sparring” at him. He afterwards secured two policemen, and got the names of the defendants. MORLEY: Did I touch the fire? Complainant: No; you did not. MORLEY: Did I strike you? Complainant: No; but you threatened me and “sparred” at me. The Mayor: In what state were the defendants? Complainant: About half drunk I think. This was about ten o’clock at night. The Mayor observed that the fires were put on for the protection of the public, and it was a shame to interfere with them. Mr. FAWCETT remarked that one had been put out altogether on the previous night, and that an accident had nearly occurred in the consequence. The Bench decided upon issuing a warrant for the apprehension of GRAHAM. So far as MORLEY is concerned the case stands adjourned. |
