A NARROW ESCAPE.

On Friday the 24th inst., while a train was being divided at Carstairs junction, on the Caledonian railway, a gentleman got out of the first class carriage to obtain refreshment. While in the refreshment rooms he heard the train whistle, and thinking that he was going to be left behind, he rushed towards the carriage.

The guard called out to him that the train would return in a short time, and tried to prevent him from getting into the carriage while the train was moving. The gentleman, however, persisted, and while in the act of stepping into the carriage, he missed his footing and fell in between the train and the platform. Fortunately the train was moving slowly at the time, and only one of the wheels passed over his foot.

With great presence of mind the guard rushed forward and dragged the gentleman from his perilous position, just as he was being forced along by the projecting step of the carriage.
