A DILEMA. Mr. Hugh M’GRAGH, innkeeper, attended before the Bench and stated that an old man for whom he had entered into surety, and against whom Mr. SABBAGE preferred a charge, had disappeared. Mr. FAWCETT: What is the amount of the bail? Mr. M’GRAGH: £10. Mr. FAWCETT: If he does not appear you will forfeit £10.
Mr. FAWCETT: What was the charge against the man? Mr. SABBAGE: He was charged with being drunk and incapable. Mr. JACKSON: There is no doubt about the case. If the man does not appear the bail will be forfeited. Mr. M’GRAGH: I can’t find him. Mr. FAWCETT: That is your look out. If you don’t produce him you must pay the £10. Mr. JACKSON: You had much better have let him remain in the police office. A short time was allowed to give Mr. M’GRAGH an opportunity of discovering the whereabouts of the missing man. * This is a mistake. TIFFEN was brought before a magistrate privately, some time ago, charged with jumping into Mrs. REID’s great brandy bottle and smashing her bar, for which he had to “pay the piper.” We called public attention to the irregularity at the time of the occurrence. |
