Carlisle Patriot - September 1st 1855

On Wednesday morning two police officers went to the house of Daniel CROZIER, Longtown, with a summons for a young man named William TURNBULL, of Bellingham, who had left his home and come to Longtown to escape the penalty of trespass and snaring rabbits, of which he had been guilty.

The constables found the door locked, but on threatening to make forcible entry it was opened to them. In they went, with a little too much precipitation for the object of their search, having concealed himself behind the door as it opened, slipped out when the officers hurried into the room.

Recovering from their surprise, they gave chase to the fugitive, but he succeeded after all in giving what the county folks call, “Leg bail” for his appearance.
