Serious disturbances have taken place at Belina, in Bosnia. The Christians there having built a church, the Turks pulled it down, and committed other excesses. They also attempted to murder the bishop. ***** The Austrian police, to clear Vienna of the crowd of vagabonds and thieves which infested it, has just arrested 400 of them together, and has had them taken off at once to the galleys at Venice and Trieste. ***** Louis Philippe has engaged M. Horace Vernet to paint three pictures representing the bombardment of Tangiers, the taking the island of Mogadore, and the battle of Isly. ***** A war steamer constructed of mahogany, and intended to be the largest in the world, is on the **ocks and will probably be launched in April next. She is to be called the "Terrible". ***** Two-thirds of the city of San Carlos, the principal town in the island of Chiloe, the most southern province in the Chilian republic, have been destroyed by fire. ***** A government agent has visited Sunderland, and surveyed and approved the site selected by the Public Walks Committee as a recreation ground for the inhabitants. ***** A ballot will take place this autumn to complete the English and Scotch militias, for which purpose it is expected an order in council with forthwith be issued. - "Standard" |
