LEST WE FORGET. ___________ Whilst there is so much to remind us of the debt we owe to those who fought and died and to their comrades who remain with us, there is perhaps a danger that we may not fully realise that the debt is not fully paid until we have worked for an achieved a peace such as shall realise the hope that the Great War was a war to end war. In a note on the subject last week I ventured to suggest that Remembrance Day might also be regarded as a Peace Day - not a day to celebrate what might be only a temporary peace, but a day on which determination should be renewed not to rest until conditions had been reached that will ensure a permanent world wide peace. The question is frequently asked, as the Rev. C.H. LEWIN asked it in his address at Keswick on Sunday, "The war was waged to end war, but can we say that war is ended?" There is only one answer to that question at present, and before it can be given in the affirmative there is a stern fight ahead for nations and individuals to stem the undercurrents, tending to grow stronger rather than weaker, which are operating against the accomplishment of the Great Aim. In the words of the Prince of Wales, "We don't want another war; we cannot even contemplate one. We must all do our utmost to avoid another war." It may perhaps be doubted if, at the moment, that utmost is being done. It is this that must not be forgotten. ******************** |
