IREBY EFFORT FOR HAIG PIT FUND. In response to considerable local feeling that an effort be made to aid the Haig Pit Fund, the committee of the Ireby Reading Room undertook the duty, and the result was a well attended Whist Drive and dance, held in the Globe Hall, Ireby. Twenty-five tables were occupied and 14 prizes had been offered. Prize Winners Ladies: 1. Miss. S. HARRISON 2. Mrs. SMITHSON 3. Miss. S. BLAYLOCK 4. Mr. J. CRAWFORD (playing as a lady) 5. Miss. L. BIRKETT Miss. E. LENNOX, hidden number Miss. Annie ELLIOTT, consolation. GENTS: 1. G. SWELL 2. M. DEANS 3. G. EDMONDSON 4. J. MCGUFFIE 5. S. GRAVES J. ISMAY, hidden number Mr. W. R. FAWCETT, consolation. Mrs. BICKERTON, Ireby Vicarage, presented the prizes, and the vicar, proposing a vote of thanks expressed indebtedness to the friends who had so generously given prizes of such great value, and also to the committee for their fine work on behalf of the parish, especially the secretary, Mr. BOULTON, who had spent so much time and care to make it a success. The M. C.'s for the whist drive were Mr. A. W. FINK and Mr. W. R. FAWCETT. The dance followed, the music being supplied by the Orpheans Band, Mealsgate,a nd refreshments by Miss. E. LENNOX, of Torpenhow. Mr. M. STODDART kindly ran special buses on the Aspatria and Mealsgate route, all fares from which were handed to the fund. The dance M. C.'s were Mr. Tom SMITH and Mr. Ike BURROWS; door keepers, Mr. B. E. BOULTON, Mr. W. HOPE, Mr. G. SMITHSON. It is hoped that a sum of £11 will be sent to the Mayor of Whitehaven. ******************** |
