THE WATER QUESTION. _____ MESSRS. CAMMELL AND Co.'s LETTER TO THE LATE CHAIRMAN OF THE LOCAL BOARD. Mr. WARWICK, clerk to the Workington Local Board, has been pressing the local Government Board to send down an inspector for the purposes of inquiry prior to borrowing £5,000 for the purpose of completing the water scheme from the river. A notification was received yesterday, (Friday) that Mr. Arnold TAYLOR would hold an inquiry on November 7th, so that some lively proceedings may be looked for, as it is understood that Mr. SMITH and those who with him have opposed the scheme, will make an effort to oppose the borrowing of the money. A correspondent has forwarded the following, which purports to be a copy of the now historic letter sent by Messrs. CAMMELL and Co. to Mr. H. BOWES, chairman of the Local Board, and which found it's way into the pocket of that gentleman, without being read to the Board: - "Sir, - The guarantee required by us from the Local Board relative to the proposal to supply these works with water not being forthcoming, and as we can no longer delay taking steps to provide ourselves with water, we hereby intimate that all negotiations between the Local Board and this Company are now at an end, and that we will proceed to carry out our own plans for independent supply." ********************** |
