GREAT CLIFTON TEMPERANCE SOCIETY. _____ The ordinary meeting of the Great Clifton Temperance Society was held in the new school room on Wednesday evening last. The president having opened the meeting, the secretary read the report, which showed a large increase in members since the visit of Mr. SMITH, 29, having joined during the two last meetings; several others are also expected to join at the next meeting. The president delivered a short address, in which he urged them to resist all temptations and to stand firm to their pledge, after which readings and recitations were given by Bros. IRELAND and CRAGG. The Wesleyan Choir also sang several hymns in a pleasing manner. The very enjoyable meeting was drawn to a close with singing and prayer. ************************ NEWSPAPERS. On Thursday evening, Mr. Geo. SUART read a paper on "Newspapers" before the members of the Parish Church Young Men's Society. The meeting was held in the Bell Street Mission Room, and was well attended. Mr. BOWNESS, one of the vice presidents of the Society, took the chair. The paper sketched the rise and growth of newspapers, and gave some interesting particulars of the newspaper press and those associated with it. On the conclusion of the paper a discussion was opened by Mr. WHITESIDE, and continued by the Rev. Mr. ANDERSON, Mr. PYLE, and the Chairman, Mr. SUART replying to the various points raised. A vote of thanks concluded the meeting. It was announced that Mr. J. C. THOMPSON would give a paper on "Labour" at the next meeting of the Society. ************************* |
