THE LAW OF ENGLAND AS TO SUNDAY LABOUR. The Worcester Magistrates who convicted WILLIAMS some days ago for cutting his own corn on Sunday, have been rebuked by the Home Office for their decision, which it appears is illegal ! The act prescribes conviction where a man follows his "ordinary calling" on the Sabbath. WILLIAMS "ordinary calling" was working for hire, and in working for himself, he was not pursuing his ordinary calling, but discharging a domestic duty not within the strict meaning of the statute. __________________________________________________________ MILITARY HONOURS. - HER MAJESTY has conferred the order of Knight Grand Cross of the Bath upon MARSHAL VAILLANT. After announcing the fall of Sebastopol, it recommends a general insurrection throughout Europe - the "illusions" that "the peoples" have any hopes from "war of the Cabinets" having now disappeared. __________________________________________________________ RATE OF DISCOUNT. - The probability of a further advance to-morrow (Thursday) of the Bank rate of discount to 6 per cent. was the chief subject of discussion during the entire day, and political news is comparatively disregarded. In the Stock-Exchange and many other quarters, but not among the leading bankers, the belief in another upward movement seemed general. "Times" ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE. GEORGE KEWNEY, Esq., solicitor, when addressing the North Shields Bench of Magistrates on Monday, in a case where a female had avowed openly her marriage with another man whilst her husband was still living, took occasion to express his deep regret at observing that in North and South Shields - a fact he knew from his professional practice - the sanctity of the marriage vow was trampled on with impunity, to an extent which was positively shocking to witness.
