COUNTY LUNATIC ASYLUM. It is understood that at the Cumberland Michaelmas Sessions, to be held in this city in the ensuing week, the Asylum Committee will present a report, agreed to unanimously, recommending the sale of Lowry Hill, and the purchase of the Garlands Estate, as the site for the projected county asylum for Cumberland and Westmorland. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "RAVENHILL" - A portrait of MR. FERGUSON's blood horse Ravenhill, which carried off the chief prize at the Exhibition of the Royal Agricultural Society held in this city in July last, is now on exhibition at MRS. THURNAM's. It is a most faithful likeness, and highly meritorious as a work of art. The artist, MR. HARRINGTON, of Carleton, near this city, intends, we understand, to have it engraved for publication. ******************************************************************************** LONGTOWN GAS WORKS The Gas Works at Longtown are now in active operation. Several private houses and shops have already been supplied, and the public lamps will be lighted in a few weeks. The works have been completed within the estimate. ************************************************* We are glad to learn that MR. J. C. THOMPSON, artist, of this city, has been appointed by the Board of Trade, Marlborough House, to the Mastership of the School of Art, Warrington. ________________________________________________________ It has been announced that DR. MCNEILE will preach in Wetheral Church this afternoon, at three o'clock. _________________________________________________________ MR. BOLES REEVES, Ensign in the 85th Foot, is Gazetted Lieutenant, by purchase, vice ALTHORP, promoted. _________________________________________________________ MR. JOHN R. WILSON, son of MR. GEORGE WILSON, of Felton, has received the appointment of surveyor of taxes of the Carlisle District, comprising the division of Cumberland, Eskdale, &c., &c. __________________________________________________________ The opening of the new hall of the Kendal Natural History and Scientific Society took place on Monday, when the REV. PROFESSOR SEDGWICK, president of the Society, delivered a lecture on some of the phenomena of meteorology and geology. ___________________________________________ QUOITING. On Friday last, MR. ISAAC WANNOP, Maxwell Arms Inn, Springfield, Gretna, gave a fat sheep to be competed for with quoits, when, the day being favourable for the sport, 20 emulous sons of the "disc" enrolled their names as competitors. The two most successful players were MR. BIRRELL, Springfield, and MR. WRIGHT, jun., Longtown. After a tough contest, distinguished by much skill and excellent action, MR. BIRRELL was declared the winner. __________________________________________________________ THE CHEAP PROVINCIAL PAPERS. The Carlisle Journal is among the confessors. "The experiment of a twice-a-week paper has not fulfilled its expectations". It has had its labours for its pains. The "bare cost of production" has not been covered by the receipts; "although from the mechanical facilities it possesses that cost has been kept as low as practicable." Our contemporary's cry therefore is, "As you were !" And it, in a time of war, such has been the result of our able and enterprising neighbour's experiment, what must be the position of the penny press in a time of peace ? Gateshead Observer. __________________________________________________________ THE DUMFRIES AND CASTLE-DOUGLAS RAILWAY. The proposal to connect Castle-Douglas and Dalbeattie with Dumfries by railway has again been brought forward under influential support, and been received with great favour in Castle-Douglas and the district around. In addition to the liberal offer of £30,000 made by the Glasgow and South-Western Company, we understand that nearly £20,000 have been already subscribed, making about £50,000 in all, or nearly one-half of the sum which would be required for the formation of the line.
