Appleby Sudden Death - CORRIE Print E-mail

On Wednesday evening, ROBERT CORRIE, a carter in the employ of MESSRS. ATKINSON & CO., the High Brewery Company, was returning from Penrith, accompanied by JOHN NICHOL, another carter.

They stopped a few minutes at the Elephant Inn, Crackenthorpe, and when they left there each got on the far end of the cart he was driving.

GEORGE NIXON, of Bongate, rode along with NICHOL, whose cart was first.  They had not proceeded far when a person on the road informed NICHOL that CORRIE had fallen from the cart.

He and NIXON returned immediately and found CORRIE lying a few yards behind his cart.  NICHOL spoke to him, but received no answer;  and on close examination was shocked to find that life was quite extinct.

It did not appear that the cart had run over any part of his body, nor that he had received much, if any injury, from the fall, --- a slight effusion of blood from the nose being the only perceptible consequence.

CORRIE was a very steady man, and was perfectly sober at the time.  He was apparently very healthy, and the cause of his sudden death has not yet transpired.

He has left a family of 11 children, 4 of whom were dependent on him for support.
