Some of the most difficult and dangerous work has been executed in the narrow lanes and streets. The old houses in Coupland were in danger of being let down when the deep sewer was cut, and many people thought it would have been a good way of making an improvement if the old places had come down, except for the loss it would have been for the tenants. Water Street and Church Street will require to be carefully supported. The streets are very narrow, with old and high buildings on each side and cellars below. It is tedious work, every foot having to be timbered. The streets are in a very sloppy state. _________________________ |
