At the usual meeting of this Board yesterday, the Clerk stated that a man named BELL, a barber at Cleator Moor, had been brought before the magistrates and convicted of ill treating an apprentice who had formerly been in the Workhouse. Mr. MUSGRAVE said the boy had no protector by the Board of Guardians. He suggested that the matter be considered by the Guardians for the parish of Cleator as whether to it was desirable or not to cancel the indentures of the boy. As to the sureties taken in £10 for the man not abusing the boy again, there were a hundred things that might be done in which the boy would be unable to bring any evidence. Mr. SMITH of Egremont seconded the motion. Mr. KIRKCONEL said that so far as the Cleator Guardians were concerned, they were of an opinion that the indentures ought to have been cancelled. What had come out in the local papers was only a tithe in comparison to what the boy had suffered. The motion was agreed to. Mr. MUSGRAVE proposed that a Committee be appointed consisting of Rev. Canon DALTON Rev. W. IVES Rev. J. O. BURCHALL Mr. HODGSON Mr. J. C. BROWN Members of the School Attendance Committee: Mr. REED Mr. A. BEDFORD Mr. J. TYSON Mr. Joseph PORTER Mr. J. MUSGRAVE, to take into consideration the duties of the school at tendance and inquiry officers. The motion was carried; Mr. H. A. FLETCHER being substituted on the committee for Mr. J. C. BROWN. _________________________ |
