THE PROPOSED MID-CUMBERLAND RAILWAY. _________________ A circular has been issued, dated Penrith, October 28th, and signed by: - Dr. TAYLOR C. FAIRER T. GLASSON R. A. TYSON Jos. EDDY R. ALLEN Lancelot T. GLASSON G. V. SMITH C. VARTY T. LAMONBY, which says: - The directors of Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway have issued a circular to the shareholders convening a meeting for the 4th November, to consider the expediency of promoting the ensuing session of Parliament a bill for making a branch railway from Troutbeck to Hesket-New-Market. We, the undersigned shareholders, are of opinion that the making of this branch line, by our company, is a matter demanding your serious attention. It would appear that the outlay necessary to make this new branch, based even on the cost of the parent line, which was made in cheap times, would be, at least, £100,000. As to the traffic the shareholders have no information; but we call to your mind the long struggle the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway had during its earlier years, and the small dividends paid by it even to a recent date. We therefore consider that this proposed branch line would be a hazardous undertaking, and doubt if it can be clearly and satisfactorily shown that it would be to the advantage of our Company to make it. We think that the expediency of taking such an important step cannot be fully considered and decided upon a single meeting. It is, therefore, our intention to propose and support the following resolution: - ‘That the consideration of such a vital matter be postponed, in order to give the shareholders time to inform themselves of the desirability or otherwise, of the proposed new undertaking.’ We would urge upon you the necessity of your personal attendance at the meeting.” ___________________________ |
