LODGING HOUSE RETURNS.

MR. SABBAGE, the inspector, has just issued his return of the number of males and females who slept in common lodging houses, registered under the Board of Health, in the city of Carlisle, during the year ending 17th November instant.

During the first quarter the total number was 6,692;  second quarter, 6,646;  third quarter, 7,562;  fourth quarter, 6,510;  making a total of 27,410.

Of these, there were...Males of full age, 20,367;  Females of full age, 6,247;
Males from 8 to 21, 251;  Females from 8 to 21, 112;  Males under 8 years, 290;  and Females under 8 years, 143.

The total number in 1854 was 33,540, so that there has been a decrease of 6,130 during the year just ended.

As compared with 1853, the decrease amounts to 12,723, and compared with 1852, to 18,308.

As a natural consequence of this great falling off, the number of common lodging houses has also decreased.  In 1842 there were 33 lodging houses registered;  in 1853, 34;  in 1854, 24;  while in 1855, the number has fallen to 20.

It should be explained that the number of lodgers, as stated above, does not correctly represent the actual number of vagrants who have passed through the town, because some of them may remain two nights or perhaps more, and each night they remain is taken into the calculation.

The majority of them, however, only remain one night:  they constitute the very dregs of society - the tramps and vagrants who are kept continually "moving on", and who seldom find it convenient to remain long in one place.

Showing a decrease of
Beasts 409; Sheep 0; Lambs 427; Calves 17; Pigs 217.

It will be perceived that there is a very large diminution in the number of beasts slaughtered in the second quarter of the past year.

The falling off occurred chiefly in the month of March and the first week of April  -  the period during which so much distress prevailed in this city and neighbourhood.

EMBEZZLEMENT.

A young man, named GEORGE LISLE, a ticket clerk at the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway station here, has been apprehended at Hexham on a charge of embezzlement.

We understand that his remittances to the head office had been found to be below the amount of his receipts, and when his accounts came to be examined, a considerable discrepancy was discovered.

Having been dismissed from the service of the company, he went to his friends at Hexham, where he has since been taken under a warrant.  He will be brought to Carlisle today, and examined before the magistrates at the Courts to-morrow.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We understand that SIR JAMES GRAHAM, Bart., M.P., has received an invitation to visit HER MAJESTY at Windsor Castle, to meet the KING OF SARDINIA.

The RIGHT HON. Bart. leaves Carlisle for London today.

LORD ABERDEEN, who was under engagement to visit SIR JAMES GRAHAM at Netherby, has postponed his visit until Tuesday next.
