A SUSPICIOUS AMERICAN SHIP. An American ship, said to have been watched closely on the coast of Sweden by one of our smaller war steamers, having put into Stockholm, has been examined, it is said, by the custom-house authorities, and found to contain nothing contraband. It was rumoured that she had a large quantity of revolvers for Russian account. The ship, however, being loaded with a large number of cotton bales, destined for some Russian port, will probably not have undergone that strict examination which would have been her fate had she fallen into the hands of an English man-of-war; and, as revolvers have been found in bales of cotton when passing through Prussia, why should not the same trick have been played off by an American captain in his cargo ... all of them being well known as first-rate speculators in such wares, ... when so much money is to be made ? Winter has, however, commenced with rigour in the North, and will prevent the execution of any such schemes, excepting on railways, for this season at least. Large quantities of saltpetre and sulphur have been sent from this city into Prussia, for transport to Russia, via Memel, and other convenient places favourable to the like operations. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ |
