NEWS AND NOTES ~~~ The Whitehaven Miners' Union; per Councillor Hanlon, have contributed £10 to the West Cumberland Moulders' Strike Fund. ~~~ Mr John Marshall has been appointed chairman of the Keswick Bench of Magistrates in succession to the late Mr. R. D. Marshall. ~~~~ Mr. J. P. Graham of St Bees, and now Sub-Postmaster of Mayle, St Ives, has been promoted to the Postmastership of Tetbury, Gloucester. ~~~ The will of Mr. Reginald Dykes Marshall, Castlerigg, Manor, Keswick, Cumberland, son of the late Mr. John Marshall, the first M.P. for Leeds has been proved at £106,965. ~~~ The Rev. Loftus G. W. Lumb has been elected County Councillor for Cleator South, in succession to Mr. Ald. Dixon, Mr. J. Walker, the Labour candidate being disqualified. ~~~ A Limelight lecture "The Blazing Balkans" will be delivered at the Y. M. C. A., on Monday night next, by Mr. C. B. Howdill. A. R. I., B.A. who has recently visited the near East (See advt) ~~~ Mr. Wm. Walker of Oaklea, Whitehaven, whose health for some time past has given great anxiety to his friends, was last (Wednesday) night much weaker and in a very grave condition. ~~~ The Robinson Memorial School at Parton is to be enlarged at a Cost of £620, towards which the sum of £ 423 is in hand. Messrs Anderson, Ltd., Whitehaven, have secured the contract for carrying out the work. ~~~ Gazette notices: 5th (Cumberland) Battalion the Boarder Regiment. -Quartermaster and Hon. Major Geo. Pecker is retired and is granted permission to retain his rank, and to wear the prescribed uniform. ~~~ The Countess of Lonsdale and Lady Bagot were the presidents of the "Lads' Ladder" and Emigration Stall at the Church Army's annual sale of work at the Portman Rooms, London, on Tuesday and Wednesday, which was opened upon the first day by H. R. H. the Duchess of Argyll, and upon the second by the Countess Beauchamp. |
