A comic incident at a serious moment in a stage play often causes greater shrieks of laughter among the audience than the most cleverly contrived “gag.” But what a moment for the players!

One such is described by Miss Gwen Etrangeon DAVIES, who is one of the many notable contributors - famous humorists , artists, novelists, stage, screen and sporting “stars” - to “The Press Gang Budget” an annual which is to make its first appearance next month as a “money raiser” for the Widow’s and Orphans’ Fund of the National Union of Journalists.

“It was at Malvern last year,” write Miss. DAVIES, “We were playing ‘The Barretts of Wimpole Street,’ On the very first performance, Flush, the famous spaniel wrecked our gravity. On the rise of the curtain he calmly walked down to the footlights, yawned at the audience and walked off through the fireplace!”

Miss. DAVIES describes it as her funniest experience. It is certainly hard to beat, but many equally as comic are related in the “Budget.”
