Cockermouth Medical Officer
Complains of Illegal Practice.

At a monthly meeting of Cockermouth Rural District Council on Monday, the Medical Officer, Dr. C. A. MASON said that in two instances recently it had been found that at the slaughterhouse at the Cockermouth Goods Station, where the slaughtering is done for the Liverpool and Manchester Markets, there has been a considerable amount of sheep slaughtered for human consumption without notification being given. This was an illegal practice.

Mr. W. BECK said that if the people who were selling at the Auction Mart that day had a sheep they wished to get rid of, and wanted to slaughter it, they had to come and knock up the Sanitary Inspector and the doctor before they could do it. He thought the inspectors and the doctors ought to help the farmers more.

The Medical Officer said the regulations were for the public good, and everyone would realise that it was imperative that meat sold for human consumption must first be examined and pronounced sound. Mr. BECK, he thought, would be one of the first to want his meat examined. This was not the case of a farmer slaughtering a sheep, but 70 to 100 had been slaughtered at a time.

General SPEDDING asked if he was to understand that a farmer could not slaughter a sheep for his own use.

The Medical Officer: Oh yes. He can if it is for his own consumption. If it is for public consumption he has to give notification.
