MARYPORT NATIVE’S APPOINTMENT A Native of Maryport, the Rev. W. DOBSON, of Maryport, who is at the present stationed at Morley, Leeds, has been appointed president of the Douai College in France. Mr. R. DOBSON, who is well known in Maryport, has two cousins,a nephew and a brother in the Catholic Priesthood. One of the cousins is the Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool. ______ GRASSLOT MISSION. A ten days’ evangelistic mission, which has been conducted by Mr. William SYKES, Connexional Evangelist, at the primitive Methodist Church, Grasslot, was brought to a close on Tuesday with a faith tea. In the evening a meeting was held, when Mr. SYKES delivered an address. Mr. C. SOWERBY, of Haltwhistle presided. _________ CROSBY VILLA ENDEAVOUR. The annual rally of Crosby Villa (Maryport) Primitive Methodist Endeavour Society was held in the Crosby Villa Church on Tuesday. Mr. J. GILBERTSON presided, and an address was delivered by Pastor CLAYTON, of the Aspatria Wesleyan Church. The “roll call” was conducted by the Rev. P. JACKSON, Maryport. __________ LIEUT. - COLONEL ROCHE-KELLY, D. S. O., RETIRES. The “London Gazette” announces the retirement from the Army of Lieut.-Colonel E. ROCHE-KELLY, D.S.O., lately commanding the first Border Regiment. He was transferred to the Border Depot from the Royal irish, when that famous regiment was disbanded, and was appointed to the command of the Border Regiment in 1927, in succession to Colonel G. H. HARRISON, D. S. O. THE MAGISTRATES. The Magistrates at Cleator Moor Court on Friday were Messrs. J. FLYNN (chairman), E. L. NANSON. W. LECK and A. SENOGLES. __________ POPPIES AT MARYPORT. The return from the sale of poppies at Maryport on November 11 amounts to a little over £50, a slightly lower figure than last year. __________ WORKINGTON C.E.M.S. St. Michael’s Church Branch of the C.E.M.S. held its weekly meeting on Monday, when Mr. J. J. ADAMS, C. A., spoke on “Health Administration.” __________ CROSBY MOTOR ACCIDENT. On Monday afternoon a motor accident occurred near the East end of Crosby. The West Cumberland Farmer’s lorry was turning off the main road and a small car coming behind caught its mudguard as it was passing. Nobody was injured. __________ BROUGHTON POPPY DAY. The sale of poppies by Broughton branch of the British Legion, including the collection taken at the morning service at Christ Church, realized £5 13s. The sellers of the poppies were Mrs. D. BECK, Mrs. W. RENNICK and Mrs. J. STEPHENSON. BILLIARDS RECORD. In the Miner’s Welfare Institute on Friday Mr. William DOBIE, of Dearham, made a record break of 100, which is the highest score that has been made on the Welfare’s table since it was opened in January 1930. The record was formerly held by Mr. J. JEFFERSON with a score of 83. ~~~~~~~~~~~ ELLENBOROUGH RECREATION TENNIS. The Ellenborough Recreation Tennis Club held a successful whist drive and supper in the Granville Hotel, Maryport last Friday. The prize winners were: - 1. Miss. H. E. JAMES, Netherton 2. Mr. A. GIBSON Men, 1. S. FEARON 2. R. HASTINGS. Mr. R. GIBBONS, hon. Secretary acted as M. C. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BURNLEY. On Tuesday the Cumberland and Westmorland Association of Burnley and district held a whist drive in the lounge of the Co-operative Café, Burnley. About 40 members and friends were present and a friendly game of whist was thoroughly enjoyed. Prizes were awarded to: - 1. Miss. WILLIAMSON, Workington 2. Mr. ASPDEN Booby, Mr. T.
