MARYPORT VICTORY DANCE

The Maryport Labour Party celebrated the return of Mr. CAPE as a member for the Workington Division by a victory dance in the Freemason’s Hall, Maryport, on Tuesday evening. Only a nominal charge was made to members and their families, and the event proved a distinct social success.

During the dance Mr. Wilson NIXON, chairman of the Maryport Labour Party, presented handbags to Mrs. CAPE and Mrs. A. ROWE, and extending a traveling case to Mr. A. ROWE, the Labour agent for the division.

In doing so, Mr. NIXON said that unfortunately Mr. CAPE was detained in the House of Commons and could not be present. No small measure of their success in the division was due to the work of Mr. ROWE. He had been a very valuable man to the Party as agent, and also to the unemployed men of the district. He was always prepared to put their cases forward to the local committees. He had done a vast amount of work for the working men of the Division, and the extending traveling case was a small token of appreciation from Maryport.

Mrs. CAPE and Mrs. ROWE briefly returned thanks, and Mr. ROWE said the presentation was a pleasant surprise. It was nice to know that one’s work was sometimes appreciated. Mr. CAPE had to stay in the House of Commons that day, and he was before the Umpire in respect of the local cases on the Wednesday, so that his attendance was impossible.

He desired to pay a tribute to the Maryport people for what they had done in the last momentous election. Maryport played its part as it had never done before, and he thanked them for it. He thought that the efforts of the Labour members of the Public Assistance Committee would mean many thousands of pounds for the people of the Division and would save many homes. They were striving to see that the people in the locality were not further reduced. They knew things looked black, but as far as it was possible they would strive to save homes from needless extremes of poverty. They were always prepared to help any individual who brought his case to them.
