Ex~Labour Member’s Decision
At Carlisle.

Mr. George MIDDLETON, who represented Carlisle as a Labour Member in two Parliaments, but was defeated by General E. L. SPEARS at the recent general elections, has decided not to contest the seat again.

Mr. MIDDLETON was some months ago appointed Chief Ecclesiastical Commissioner, a position he retains despite that his party is now out of office.

In a farewell letter to his supporters, Mr. MIDDLETON states: -

“On reflection, there is nothing in our figures at the General Election to give anything but encouragement. We have never fought without showing progress in our figures.

“I hope that my withdrawal from the political life of the city will make no difference to the efforts all friends of the party will make, not merely to retain the efficiency of the party machine, but to increase its strength and efficiency.

WORKERS THANKED.

Mr. MIDDLETON expressed his appreciation of the work of the officers of the party and the executive committee, “and to the thousands of the rank and file who have been associated with me in the fights.”

He concludes: “As a last word, I express my warm thanks for the splendid work done by the women, both through their section and individuality.”

Carlisle Labour Party has decided to invite nominations from the affiliated organizations for a prospective candidate. These nominations are to be received by the end of the year.
