Ellenborough Sweep Ticket
Belongs to Wigton

Tracing the non-de-plume, “Ewanrigg,” Ellenborough, Maryport, which drew a consolation prize in the Irish Sweepstake, proved quite an exciting business. The telegram was first taken to Mr. BELL, a gardener, of Ewanrigg, who, in spite of the attraction of £100 could not claim it.

Eventually, Mr. Cyril ALLISON, formerly of Edge Hill, Ellenborough and now of 2 Railway Terrace, Netherton, Maryport, heard of it and went to Mr. BELL and from there to the Post Office, where he claimed the telegram.

He was courting Miss. PEARSON, of Wigton, at the time he bought it. She is now his wife, and the ticket was purchased by Mr. ALLISON for her mother, Mrs. Priscilla PEARSON of Wigton.

The counterfoil was left to be filled in by the seller of the ticket, who forgot the name. He could not fill in “ALLISON,” or any prize could have been claimed successfully by Mr. ALLISON, so he obligingly filled in Ewanrigg.

In spite of the note in “Things in General” Ellenborough is still out in the cold with Grasslot, though an Ellenborough man is in very close touch with the money. Even so, he now lives at Netherton. Netherton cannot be kept out of these prizes nowadays.

Mrs. Ann BLAIR, of Crookdale, Blennerhasset, near Aspatria, has also drawn a £100 consolation prize. She received news of her luck late on Thursday afternoon. She is a widow with seven children, three of whom are still attending school.
