Sure of Mid~Cumberland in a
Straight Fight.
 

Mr. Arthur HOLGATE who was a Liberal candidate in the mid-Cumberland Division at the general election, claims that that was the only division in which the Conservative majority was reduced.
 
 
Mr. HOLGATE stated at a Liberal bazaar at Keswick that the more they studied the results of the general election the more amazing appeared the results in that division.
 
 
Four members of the Cabinet and 20 members of Parliament had agreed that he could win the division the next time, and that the result in that constituency was the best in the country from the Liberal standpoint. On a straight party issue in a straight fight there was no doubt who would win.
 
 
Mr. HOLGATE added: -
 
 
“I am coming round rapidly to the idea that we cannot have anything like a satisfactory group system in this country, but that there can only be two great political schools - the narrow, self-contained school and the Liberal school of humanitarianism.”
