Double Bereavement at Maryport. One of the best known and most popular men in the Maryport district, Mr. George THOMPSON, hairdresser, of John Street, Maryport, died on Monday night whilst sitting in a chair at the bedside of his sister, Mrs. GIBSON, of Hine’s Yard, Crosby Street, Maryport, who was approaching the end of her last illness. Mrs. GIBSON died on the Tuesday night and a double funeral had been arranged for brother and sister on Thursday. Mr. THOMPSON was one of the most genial and good natured men anyone could wish to meet. In his trade he served Maryport and the outside districts. He was almost as well known by Dearham, Broughton Moor and Flimby people as he was by the townspeople, and hundreds will feel that by his death they have lost a good friend. When Mr. THOMPSON died in the sick room his sister was fortunately too ill to know what had happened. He was 46 years of age, and a widow and three young daughters are left. A life long member of the Maryport Branch of the Oddfellow’s Friendly Society, Mr. THOMPSON was also a good baritone concert singer, a member of the Christ Church Choir, and a consistent worker in the interests of that church. He was also a bird fancier who specialized in canaries and goldfinches, and his exhibits and name were well known wherever there was interest in canary shows in the county. An ex-soldier, Mr. THOMPSON was apparently quite himself up to the day of his death, when he complained about a severe pain across his heart. However he carried out his duties as usual in his shop, and after closing it went to see his sister, who had been in declining health for a long period. INQUEST ADJOURNED. There has been no inquest on Mr. THOMPSON, but one was opened on Tuesday night on William McARTHUR, the Maryport master mason, of Crosby Street, who collapsed shortly after purchasing his newspaper on Sunday. Formal evidence of identification was given and the inquest adjourned till next Tuesday. |
