School Boys and South African Match. At a meeting of the Cumberland Rugby Union, at Aspatria, last night, Mr. VALENTINE, Workington, presiding, Moresby sent a letter complaining about the cancellation of matches at Moresby and other clubs offering them mid week fixtures instead, which were never fulfilled. They had two such cases last year and on November 7 last Silloth disappointed them, in spite of the fact that Moresby wrote and pointed out they had not had a home match for six weeks and would not have another for three weeks. The letter was sent by Mr. J. PATTERSON, and asked the Executive is anything could be done to make clubs more careful and considerate in the future. Mr. MAXWELL of Moresby, said that Silloth gave as one reason that they had Shield tie, and another that five players wanted to go to Carlisle Fair. Major OGLETHORNE, Keswick, moved that the attention of the Clubs be called to the cancellation of matches and that Clubs be appealed to not to arrange senior games set aside for Shield ties unless they can fulfill them. Mr. GARRIGAN seconded, and the motion was carried. Mr. VALENTINE suggested that in this case Silloth be asked to go to Moresby on the date of the remaining fixture at Silloth, or else pay the Moresby Club’s expense in going to Silloth. A motion that all school boys be admitted to the South African’s match at Workington at a charge of 3d instead of 6d, was carried in preference to one that organized parties of school boys numbering 20 or more be admitted for three pence. It was agreed that the entertainment of the South Africans, who will stay at Carlisle, be left in the hands of the President, Capt. HODGKINSON, who will have power to co-opt the service of other members. A ruling was given Moresby that when the appointed referee did not turn up for a Shield tie a substitute was not permissible. |
