______ Death of Whitehaven Ship’s Chandler. The death took place at the Whitehaven Hospital on Tuesday of Mr. Joseph HOWSON, the well known ship’s chandler and master shipwright, who carried on business at 1, East Strand, Whitehaven. Mr. HOWSON met with an accident some four years ago and this was indirectly the cause of his death, which occurred soon after his admittance to the hospital where he was to have undergone an operation. After receiving his training at Whitehaven and Newcastle, Mr. HOWSON succeeded to the business established by his father and Mr. ANDERSON over 40 years ago, and was at work up to the time of his death. A member of an old Whitehaven family who have been associated with the sea for a long period, while a young man he was actively interested in boating as well as sucuring the principal prizes for the Solway, which he earned the tile of the “Champion Oarsman of the Solway.” He was also a nephew of the late Commander John HOWSON, a native of Whitehaven, who before his death in 1907 was Commodore of the Castle Line and commander of the “Drummond Castle,” on which Mr. GLADSTONE made his famous Mediterranean tour. During the South African War Commander HOWSON was also appointed Honorary Commander of His Majesty’s Royal Naval Reserve. Aged 57 years, Mr. HOESON, formerly resided at Mountain View before taking up residence at 19 Catherine Street. He leaves a widow, three sons and a married daughter. |
