A Week of Sorrow Print E-mail

Maryport has had another week of sorrow - the third in succession. Two well-known and popular men in business in the town have died suddenly - Mr. George THOMPSON, at the bedside of his elder sister, Mrs. T. GIBSON, Crosby Street, whom he preceded by less than 24 hours, while Mr. William MCARTHUR collapsed and died soon after purchasing his Sunday newspaper. In addition there is news that Mr. Harry MELMORE, formerly of Maryport, has died in hospital at St. Vincent in the Cape Verde Islands following an accident on the ss Baluchistan, in which he was scalded.

Mr. MELMORE was a member of a well known Maryport family. His mother, Mrs. MELMORE, is now 80 years of age and Is living in Warwick Road N., Old Traford, Manchester, together with her daughter, Mrs. NELSON, who married Bennie, son of the late Capt. NELSON, Harbour Master of Maryport.

The family left Maryport seventeen years ago, shortly after the death of another son of the late Capt. H. H. MELMORE, “Bob” who passed away at the age of 21. “Melmore House” in Norman Terrace, still marks the residence of the family in Maryport, a family that still has many friends in the town.

The late Mr. Harry MELMORE, who had been married only 11 months, stayed in Maryport quite recently with Miss. F. IRVING, a good friend of the family.
