Workington Labourer Sent To Gaol Arrested while wearing a shirt and collar he had stolen, a labourer appeared at an occasional Court at Workington, and was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. He was John COLLINS, aged 21, living at SAVAGE’s Lodging House, Udale Street, Workington, and the charge against him was one of stealing a gent’s stripped shirt and collar, value 8s 11d, from the backyard at 22 Berwick Street, the property of Mr. James SANDHAM, of that address. Mr. SANDHAM said his brown and white shirt and collar were being washed. The next day they were missing, so he reported the matter to the police. He did not know anything about the accused. Detective Constable WHYTE said that after receiving a complain the made inquiries, with Detective Sergeant BAUM and ascertained that a youth from 18 to 20 had been seen in the vicinity. He stopped the defendant in Finkle Street, and asked him where he had got the shirt and collar he was wearing. Defendant replied that he had bought it off his mother, who went out hawking. Witness then showed him a collar of identical pattern to the shirt and told him the reason for his inquiries. Defendant then said, “I took the shirt because my own was dirty.” Witness took defendant to the police station and cautioned and charged him there and he replied, “That’s right enough.” |
