FIRE AT GOSFORTH. - On the afternoon of Sunday last, a fire was discovered
in the stack-yard of Mr. Edward ROBINSON, of Townend, parish of Gosforth.  A
large number of the inhabitants were immediately upon the spot, when it was
found that two stacks of oats were in a blaze, and a third had taken fire.
There was fortunately a plentiful supply of water, and every one exerted
himself as if the result of putting the fire out depended upon his own
individual effort.  Of the three stacks, a considerable quantity was saved,
one of them being shifted before the fire reached it, thus cutting off
communication with the remaining stacks in the yard.  How the fire
originated at present remains a mystery.  It is calculated that about 150
stooks of oats were destroyed.

Wednesday Nov. 17 being the 300th anniversary of  QUEEN ELIZABETH's
accession to the throne of these realms, and also the foundation of the
Royal College at St. Peter's, the event was celebrated at Westminster Abbey
by the performance of a full choral service, including the litany, which was
chanted by the Rev. C. M. ARNOLD, Minor Canon, from Tallis;  Mr. TURLE
presided at the organ.  The sermon was preached by the Rev. Dr. TRENCH, Dean
of Westminster, from the 33d chapter of Isaiah, and 5th and 6th verses, who,
in a most eloquent discourse, paid a tribute to the great ELIZABETH, who,
whatever her private foibles might be, never allowed them to interfere with
her royal duties in the advancement of education by the endowment of Grammar
Schools, commenced by her brother, EDWARD THE SIXTH.
