ISLE OF MAN - Efforts are making in this island to accomplish two praiseworthy objects: to get up a subscription for the preservation of that very interesting relic of antiquity, Peel Castle; and the laying down a submarine electric cable between the Isle of Man and the English coast. A meeting for this latter purpose was held last week at Douglas, S. HARRIS, Esq., in the chiar. Three routes were named, viz., from Maughold Head to St. Bees; from the Point of Ayr to the Mull of Galloway; or from the Point of Ayr to Barrow Head; the latter appeared to present the fewest difficulties in laying down the cable and greatest security to the cable when laid, fears being entertained that danger would arise in the two other lines from trawling and the anchoring of ships. The working expenses were estimated at £750 per annum, and the profit on the outlay 10 per cent. A committee was formed, and the public will be appealed to. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` |
