THE HEALTH COMMITTEE At the meeting of this committee, held on Tuesday, the following were present: - Mr. C. P. HARDY (Chairman) Mr. G. DIXON Mr. J. IRVING Mr. E. JAMES Mr. J HUTHART Mr. A. ROUTLEDGE Mr. J. RICHARDSON Mr. G. PORTER Mr. BENDLE Mr. J. HOLLINGSWORTH Mr. G. RAYSON Mr. E. BOWMAN Mr. H. TWEDDLE Mr NANSON Mr. C. HODGSON Mr. T. HUTTON Mr. REEVES Mr. CARTMELL (Clerk) Mr. McKIE (surveyor) Mr. Bent (inspector) APPOINTMENT OF A NEW CHAIRMAN Mr. G. DIXON moved that Mr. HARDY be appointed chairman for the ensuing year. The motion was seconded by Mr. HODGSON. Mr. HOLLINGSWORTH moved the appointment of Mr. I. JAMES. The motion having been seconded, a division took place. The votes were as follows: For Mr. I. JAMES......................................9 For Mr. HARDY........................................5 Mr. I. JAMES was absent. A resolution to the effect that he was appointed was entered in the books. Mr. HARDY thanked the committee for the honour he had received them in his appointment to the chairmanship which had only been a 'locum tenens'. He should still continue to show devotion to the interests of the town. The next thing to do was to appoint a vice-chairman for that day. Mr. C. HODGSON thought that to do so would be out of order. Mr. IRVING proposed that Mr. HARDY by chairman for that day, and the motion was agreed to. Mr. HARDY said that it belonged to the authority of the chairman to appoint a vice-chairman. Mr. REEVES said that with regard to the appointment of a vice-chairman, the fact of the matter was, that during the past year, the vice-chairman had never been present when the chairman was absent. Mr. BENDLE proposed that the subject of appointing a vice-chairman he considered at the next meeting. This was agreed to. LAZONBY vs. CAITHNESS FLAGS Mr. HARDY said that on the 26th of October their Surveyor reported with regard to what kind of flags might be used, and recommended the use of Caithness. On that occasion, Mr. HOLLINGSWORTH suggested the use of Lazonby flags, and not Caithness. Mr. McKIE said that Caithness flags, when laid, cost 5s per yard, and Lazonby 3s 3d. Mr. HOLLINGSWORTH said that if they used Caithness flags, the cost of flagging the streets might be about £2,000 extra. Caithness flags were used in Edinburgh and Newcastle. To take Lazonby to the later place would cost about 13d. a yard, so that they would be as dear there as Caithness. Lazonby flags were good and cheap, and equal to Caithness. The following resolutions on the subject were then passed: That no further supply of Caithness flags be now ordered by this board; that the surveyor report to the next meeting as to the respective prices of Haltwhistle and the different qualities of Lazonby flags. The following resolution was passed: Thtat the Surveyor be directed to place a urinal in the pig market, adjoining the Corporation Road, and supply it with water; that water be supplied to all the existing public urinals The treatment which Mr. HARDY has received is at once ungenerous and unjust. As Chairman of the Health Committee he has displayed equal zeal and ability. We have not a word to offer in disparagement of Mr. Isaac JAMES He is a worthy and right-minded man. But without offence to him we may fairly say that Mr. HARDY has shewn himself both able and willing to render great services to the town; and to his honour be it recorded that it is precisely on that account he has been superseded. Let him be assured that the Burgesses of Botchergate Ward, and the inhabitants generally appreciate his conduct, and will not forget it next November, when he goes out of office. If he be not then triumphantly returned, disgrace will fall upon the ward, and an example of the worst kind will stand in the way of all candidates for municipal honours whose object it is to assert the public cause in opposition to party dictation and monoply. ==================================== |
