HORSES-This being the Wednesday before Martinmas, the usual horse fair was held on the sands. There were upwards of 90 horses shown, consisting chiefly of draught horses, with a few colt and saddle horses. the demand was not brisk in the forenoon, but some beasts changed owners at prices a shade below those obtained at the Rood Fair. PIGS-There were 90 pigs in the market, and a pretty fair demand. Best pigs 20s to 23s; secondary 6s upwards. PORK.-The pork market being now opened for the season, there were 80 carcases exposed for sale this morning, all of which met with ready purchasers, the inquiry being brisk. The price was ** 8d to 5s 10d per imperial stone, but in some instances we heard of something more being given, with a luckpenny. _______________________________________ EDINBURGH CATTLE MARKET, Wednesday, Nov. 17.-The supply of sheep this morning was 4,966. The horses were generally of an inferior description, and prices were somewhat lower. ________________________________________ LOCKERBIE NOVEMBER CATTLE & SHEEP FAIR. This fair, the last of the season, was held on the world-famed Lockerbie Hill, on the 11th inst. It was anticipated that there would be a large show of cattle and sheep, but it proved contrary to expectation, there being only a meagre supply of both classes of animals. The attendance of buyers was by no means large; many that would have been present were disappointed by the stoppage of the 9 a.m. train from Carlisle, and those that were present bought sparingly. On the whole it was a very dull market. Little or no business was done until noon, when only a few lots of inferior half-bred lambs were sold. From this time till three o'clock odd lots were to be seen wending their way to the station, amid the barking of dogs and the shouts of the topsmen; and it was not till dusk that the unsold samples made their exit from the hillside. The show of sheep generally was very poor, there being few first-class animals offered; but those sold maintained former prices, and there was an appearance of a slight advance in the figures from last fair. The show of cattle consisted principally of small West Highlanders and a number of polled bullocks, which met a dull inquiry. Nearly two-thirds of the cattle offered left the ground unsold; The numbers on the ground ere: - Cattle 60 West Highlanders and 50 polled bullocks. Sheep 500 half-breds, 300Cheviots,and 250 Crosses. The prices were - for the Highlanders from £5 to £6 a head; polled cattle £9 to £9 10s a head. Sheep- Half-breds from 15s to 20s; Cheviots 7s 6d to 9s; and crosses, 10s to 14s 6d. ________________________________________ NEWCASTLE CATTLE MARKET, Tuesday, Nov. 16. - The show of stock presented for sale to-day exhibited an increase of 69 beasts, but a decline of 480 sheep, as compared with that of last week. Respecting quality, that of cattle was about the worst that ever stood in this market; sheep is also very inferior. The supply of beef comprised 975 head. We have a decided improvement to note in the beef trade. Buyers were numerous, and the weather having set in extremely cold, it had a favourable influence; hence nearly all were disposed of at extreme rates. The number of sheep was 5380. the finest descriptions of wedders, viz., Leicester, Cheviots, about 17 lb. per qr. made fully 6-3/4 per lb; but generally speaking the mutton trade was in a sluggish state, especially for old ewes. Prices had a downward movement, and part remained unsold. Pigs, 754, sold slowly. Small neat porke** moved quickly off, at about late rates; but the larger kinds receded fully 3d per stone from the rates of last week, and part remained unsold. Prices: Beasts - prime heifers 7s 6d; secondary sorts 7s to 7s 3d; good steers 7s 3d; middling 6s 9d to 7s; cows 5s 6d to 6s 6d. Pork - large 5s 6d to 6s 3d; small 6s 6d to 7s 3d per stone of 14 lbs.
