CATTLE MARKETS, FAIRS, &C. CARLISLE CATLE MARKET, Saturday, November 13. - We had a very good show of Galloway and short-horned bullocks and heifers, and anything that was good met with a fair sale, a portion leaving unsold.Several lots of Highland heifers, but very little business done; a few moderate Irish, which left unsold; a poor show of calving cows and heifers, which were soon picked up. A few lambs were shown, but no sales effected. The following are the prices: - Galloway stirks £4 10s to £6;Galloway heifers for stall feeding £8 to £10; short-horned stirks £5 to £7; heifers for stall feeding £10 to £12; Highlanders £3 to £5 _______________________________________ CARLISLE FAT CATTLE MARKET, November 18.-The show of cattle at our market to-day was more in number by 10 or 12 head compared with that of last week, the number being 35 head on offer, consisting of 6 Shorthorns, 14 Galloways, 2 West Highlands, 6 Irish, and 7 Cross breeds. They were all young cattle. There was a great fall off in the number of Sheep compared with the last few weeks, the number on offer to-day not being more than about 330, consisting of Cheviots, Herdwicks, West Downs, Black Faced, and Half Breed; the whole were of good average quality for the season. We had only 2 calves on offer, and of very poor quality. there were 4 Pigs on offer, very nice ones. Business appeared to be done with great caution by both parties. Sales were dull rather than otherwise. The following are the prices: - Beef from 5s 6d to6s 6d per stone of 14 lbs.; mutton 5d to 6-1/2d; veal 6d to 6-1/2d per lb.; roasters 6s to 6d per stone of 14 lbs., sinking offal. _______________________________________ SALFORD CATTLE MARKET. A very fair demand, at rather better prices for the best stock. Middling quiet without change. Beef 4d to 6-1/2d; mutton 6d to 7d per lb. sinking the offal. Beasts 2865; sheep 6225 at market. ________________________________________ METROPOLITAN CATTLE MARKET, Monday, Nov. 15. The total imports of foreign stock into London last week amounted to 7,576 head. In the corresponding week in 1857, we received 4,374; in 1856, 6,367; in 1855, 7,732; in 1854, 6,808; in 1853, 8,574; and in 1852, 4,873 head. As the navigation in the north of Europe will shortly close, we may look forward to heavy imports of beasts during the next three or four weeks owing to the scarcity of food. There was a large supply of foreign stock on offer here to-day in a very middling condition, and sales progressed slowly at barely the late decline in value. The arrivals fresh up this morning from our own grazing counties were seasonably good as to number, but somewhat deficient in quality. The primest Scots, shorthorns, &c sold steadily at very ful prices. Otherwise, the trade ruled comparatively hevy at last week's currancy. From Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Northamptonshire we received 3100 shorthorns; from other parts of England 400 of various breeds; from Scotland 100 Scots, and from Ireland 850 oxen, &c. The total supply of sheep was rather extensive, but it was chiefly composed of inferior breeds. Prime Downs sold without difficulty at very full prices; but other sheep were very dull, and the turn lower. About 850 sheep came to hand from Ireland, and some Scotch breeds sold as high at 61s each. We were scantily supplied with calves, which sold steadily, and prices had an upward tendency. Pigs, the supply of which was moderate, sold heavily at the late decline in value. =================================== |
