CORPORATION PATRONAGE. (To the Editor of the Carlisle Patriot) SIR. - Will you oblige me by inserting the enclosed letter to the Mayor and Corporation of Carlisle, in reference to their recent appointment of an auctioneer for the Borough ? WORSHIPFUL SIR AND GENTLEMEN: -  It is not my purpose to question your authority or the right of exercising it;  but I trust you will not feel angry with me, being a burgess and a rate-payer, when I courteously inquire at your hands, if you thought that out of the four auctioneers who all have a voice in placing you in an elevated situation, none of the four, viz., W. BROWNE,   M. ARMSTRONG,   J. DIXON,   or myself, were sufficient to dispose of any portion of that property of which we leave the privilege, as men, to appoint you as guardians ? Surely, when you considfer for a moment with that liberal mindedness, for which the world has for some time past given you credit, you cannot but think, that the appointment of a person altogether unconnected with our merry city  --  to sell three or four times in the year " a muck midden ", the extent I believe of your business - is unjust to the rate-paying auctioneers. At all events, most Worshipful Sir and Gentlemen, when I consider that I am paying upwards of £25 in licenses alone in the Borough, I really do think that the appointment of a non-resident auctioneer is, to say the least of it, as injudicious and inconsistent as it must appear extraordinary to the citizens.
