Mr. THACKERAY Print E-mail
The Maryport Advertiser - May 5, 1882
Mr. THACKERAY.
______

A very faithful and striking likeness of Mr. THACKERAY has just been placed on the walls of the Reform Club. The portrait was paid for by a voluntary subscription among the members of the club.

Mr. THACKERAY was during many years a frequenter of the Reform, and many of the present members remember well the features and the voice of the great novelist, whose favourite table in the coffee room is still pointed out.

The portrait is placed in one of the sunk panels in the noble hall of the club, the corresponding panel being occupied by the likeness of another famous member, Lord MACAULAY.

It may be mentioned that at the Anthenaeum Club, of which THACKERAY was also a member, a table is shown at which the greater part of “The Virginians” was written.
