Mr. CARLYLE.

The Century Magazine for the present month publishes the first installment of a diary kept by CARLYLE whilst he was on tour in Ireland in the year 1849. It is a very interesting and characteristic piece of work, full of these extraordinary graphic and incisive comments upon men and things which abound in all his writings, and which have done so much to give offence to the whole race of Cockney critics. But it would be interesting to know how the Century has secured possession of this precious manuscript.

Very ugly rumours are afloat as to the way in which a large number of CARLYLE’s most confidential communications to his wife and others have been allowed to pass into the open market. It is hardly possible that his family should have consented to the sale of these documents as mere autographs; it is quite certain that his literary executor, Mr. FROUDE, indeed, seems to be puzzled as to the way in which some of the earlier letters have disappeared.

Now that a very important work by the great author, which was clearly not intended for publication, has found it’s way into print, it may be hoped that some light will be thrown upon the manner in which the CARLYLE manuscripts have been dispersed.
