HARBOUR COMMITTEE. _______ A meeting of the Harbour Committee was held at the Harbour office on Tuesday afternoon last, when letters were read from two firms of ship owners enclosing requisitions signed by nearly all the ship owners in Belfast trading to this port, and also a number of ship owners belonging to Maryport, complaining of the towage rates of the Maryport Steam Shipping Company, also a want of service, and offering to send a powerful steam tug to the port to render assistance to vessels entering the harbour, if agreeable to the Trustees. We understand that the Trustees decided to allow the proffered steamer to come to Maryport, and we may expect her arrival here in a short time. For the situation of Harbour boatman there were about 15 applications, but owing to the treatment which their recommendation received at the last monthly meeting, the committee decided to refer the appointment to the Board, in order that the chairman may have a voice in the matter. |
