DEPLORABLE TREATMENT OF A LUNATIC.
 
 Led by a rumour to make inquiry, the Holsworthy police, accompanied by the Parish medical officer, visited a farmhouse occupied by well-to-do people, and found in an almost empty room a woman about thirty years old, chained by both arms to the wall, and lying on a wool sack filled with straw from which the chains prevented her moving.
 
 She was demented and spoke incoherently, although she sang hymns sweetly and correctly. She had no particle of clothing and was sitting in filth of long accumulated....
