A CHARGE OF THEFT.
______

Sinclair DAVIDSON, 23 years of age, cook on board the schooner Ethiopia, now lying in harbour at Maryport, was arrested by Sergeant HARTLEY on Wednesday afternoon charged on suspicion with having stolen a watch from the person of J. O’NEIL, whilst asleep in the forecastle of the s.s. Ardmore on the night of the 2nd inst.

Prisoner and O’NEIL, it appears, had been drinking at the Crown Inn, Senhouse Street, on the 2nd inst., and they left that place at about eleven p. m. They afterwards went on board the Ardmore, and when in the forecastle O’NEIL fell asleep while the prisoner was sitting beside him. When O’NEIL awoke the next morning he found his watch gone and the albert chain attached to the waistcoat. He then went to the prisoner on board the Ethiopia and charged with having stolen the watch, but he denied it.

Information was given to the police, and the prisoner, as we stated, was apprehended. When charged with the offence at the police station prisoner admitted having stolen the watch, which he said he had concealed under the bowsprit. The prisoner was taken to his vessel, and he pointed out the place the watch was concealed, and Sergeant HARTLEY took possession of it.

The prisoner will be brought before the magistrates to-day.
