ASSAULT AT MARYPORT.
_______

At Maryport on Friday, George COULTHARD, coalminer, Craikhow, was charged with having, on the 17th April, violently assaulted Henry OSTLE, landlord of the Commercial Inn, Dearham.

The complainant, who appeared to be in a weak state of health, stated that on the date named, when he was driving home in company of a friend, the defendant stopped the horse. The man was rather full of drink at the time, and witness looked upon the matter as rather a lark and drove on. The defendant, however followed along the road, and afterwards came into the Commercial Inn and kicked up a row with the complainant’s friend in the kitchen.

Complainant was in the bar at the time, and in consequence of the noise went into the kitchen to restore order. After doing so he returned to the bar, and defendant followed him and threw down sixpence in payment for some drink he had had in the morning. Complainant replied that there was no need for that, some other time would do, and when picking up the money the defendant struck him violently over the eye with a pint, inflicting a wound which bled freely. Was in bed four days from the effect of the blow.

The defendant pleaded guilty, adding he was drunk and knew nothing at all of the matter. The Clerk pointed out to the defendant that he had committed a very serious offence, and that the result might have proven the death of the complainant.

The Complainant in answer to the Bench, said the defendant had since expressed his sorrow for what he had done. On the same morning defendant was in his house and had some breakfast and four glasses of whiskey punch.

 Fined £1 and expenses.
