LITERARY.  LOCAL AND OTHER VERSE.

TO I--------.

Thanks for your favour, dear old friend,
Those pictured faces bring to me,
Bring back to me more vividly
The memory of that good old time,
That happy time so long ago,
When life was young and fresh and sweet
And all our world seemed bright and fair,
When you and I together lived
In trusting love and sympathy,
Heart bared to heart,
No chilling cloud, no little cloud
E'er came between thy love and mine.
How dear your friendship is to me;
A better place this world would be
Were all like thee, were all like thee.
Since then our lives have changes seen,
Changes of varied shade and sheen,
But whatsoever intervene
The memory of those three sweet years-----
Like an oasis, fresh and green----
Will in my heart abide.

SPRING FLOWERS.

The snowdrop in its modest purity
    Arrives the first in all the floral band,
    With drooping head named rightly snowdrop, and
The golden crocus follows speedily;
And soon the white or blue variety,
    All showing welcome springtime is at hand.
    A few wild daisies scattered o'er the land
In sheltered nooks might through all winter be.
The buttercups appear at spring's advance,
    The Mayflowers, hyacinth, and primrose sweet,
And daffodils in cold March breezes dance.
    Some fade as others come our eyes to greet.
Thus year by year returning full and free,
Are sweet spring flowers in garden, wood and lea.
