SHORT LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** ANTI-VACCINATION. In the House of Commons on Monday, a petition was presented by Mr. D. AINSWORTH from the West Cumberland Vaccination League and the inhabitants of Maryport and district in favour of the repeal of the compulsory Vaccination Act. ****** CROSBY YOUNG MEN'S IMPROVEMENT CLASS. The first meeting of this class was held on Monday night. Mr. John DOW was elected president, and Mr. T. ARMSTRONG, secretary. The president, in his opening address, referred to the good derived from these classes, and after the usual business there was a disclosure of the hat, and the different subjects were very ably discussed by the members. At the close of the meeting a vote of thanks was awarded to the president, who very suitably replied. ****** REVIVAL SERVICES AT DEARHAM. In connection with the above another "hallelujah" supper was held on Friday evening last, when a goodly number sat down. The tables were presided over by: Mrs. RITSON (2) Mrs. BROWN (2) Mrs. WATSON Mrs. SARGINSON Mrs. HOGARTH Misses BLACKBURN IREDALE BENSON LISTER PINK S. A. THOMPSON On Monday a free tea was given to the young converts, after which Mr. JOHNSTONE delivered his farewell address. ****** DAMAGE TO SOUTH PIER. On Sunday morning last the s.s. City of Hamburg, LAMONT, master, arrived off this port, and as she was entering the Harbour refused to answer her helm. She put out to sea and a second attempt was made to enter the harbour, but the steamer could not be steered, and ran into the pier, which was very much damaged. Having got clear of the pier she again put out to sea, and upon examining the steering gear it was found the wheel sheaves had got blocked. These being put into working order, the vessel came in all right. |
