SAD DEATH OF A MARYPORT LAD. Dr. ELLIOT, the city coroner, held an inquest at the Infirmary, Carlisle, on Monday, on the body of William Henry NIXON, nine years of age, who died in the infirmary from the effects of an operation. It appeared from the evidence of the deceased's father, Humphrey NIXON, tailor, Maryport, and Mr. John BELL, his brother-in-law, that the boy had suffered from difficulty of breathing, in consequence of a tumour resting on the windpipe for some years. He was taken to the infirmary in February. The only hope of saving him from suffocation lay in the success of an operation, and this step was taken with the consent of the boy's parents. A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned. ****** PRIMITIVE METHODIST SOCIETY MARYPORT CIRCUIT. The quarterly meeting of the Maryport Circuit was held on Wednesday, the Rev. John EASTWOOD presiding. The Rev. Matthew JOHNSON, secretary, and the Rev. R. SHIELDS, Wigton, reader, were present. The circuit was reported to be in a very prosperous condition. There was an increase of 33 Sunday school teachers and 54 scholars. The membership has also been considerably increased during the year, 50 additional new ones were reported to the district meeting and conference. Financially the circuit was very much improved and was never in better condition. Mr. R. SHARPE was appointed delegate to the district meeting, and Mr. I. MOSSOP, vice. The next quarterly meeting was appointed to be held at Dearham. ****** WESLEYAN CHAPEL, SILLOTH. On Friday evening MIss. INMAN concluded the series of rivival services in the Wesleyan Chapel, Silloth. This week she has commenced a similar series at Wigton. ****** WESLEYAN CHAPEL, WIGTON. On Sunday last, a week's services, to be conducted by Miss. INMAN, were commenced in the Wesleyan Chapel, Wigton. The congregations have increased each night, and sitting room could not be found for the crowds who attended to hear the preacher. ****** NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING. As a little girl, about eleven years of age, was returning home in company with some other children from Wiggonby School to Biglands on Tuesday evening, she was overpowered by the strong wind whilst crossing a plank over a deep ditch, and fell into the water. She was pulled out with great difficulty by her companions, and it was some time before she was sufficiently recovered to continue the homeward journey. |
