LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. ****** THE SHERIFF. The Sheriff of Cumberland, Mr. George ROUTLEDGE has appointed Mr. Edward Lamb WAUGH, Cockermouth, to be his Under-Sheriff. ****** FATAL FALL FROM A WINDOW. A sad accident has occurred at Marseilles. Madame Louis ARNAVON, a lady belonging to one of the first families in the town, overbalanced herself as she was looking out of one of the windows of her house, in the Rue Sylvabelle, and received such injuries that she expired an hour afterwards. ****** The Inman steamer City of Berlin, which had been disabled on her outward voyage, was towed into Boston on Sunday night. ****** The Empress of Austria paid a visit to the Queen on Monday at Windsor Castle, which she left for Dover at 2 p.m. Her Imperial Majesty embarked on board a special steamer, and sailed for Calais at a little after seven o'clock. ****** A furious gale from the north west raged in the north of Scotland on Monday accompanied by heavy snow, and communication was stopped in several places. During the height of the storm a shoal of whales was driven into Weisdale Voe, where more than 300 of them were captured. ****** Telegrams from Brussels report the arrest of three men and two women on the charge of being concerned in the robbery from the Hatton Garden Post Office last year. The principal prisoner, who is said to be a ticket-to-leave man, violently resisted his arrest. Jewels to the value of 22,000 francs were found in their possession. |
