The following cases have been brought before the sitting magistrates at this office, and disposed of as under: - Jonathan BOAK, for being drunk and begging in the Crescent at eleven o’clock on the night of Friday, the 26 ultimo, committed for one month. _______ Richard RELPH, charged with embezzling various sums of money, the property of his master, Joseph THOMPSON, of Cardewless. Committed for trial. _______ Thomas DOUGLAS, charged with pilfering from a stall in Botchergate on Saturday, the 27th ultimo. Committed as a vagrant for six weeks. _______ Joseph KIRKBRIDE of Hesket, charged with collecting a disorderly crowd in English Street and Botchergate, at seven o’clock in the evening of Saturday last, and pretending to be insane, in order to obtain money. Committed for seven days. _______ William HEWSON, charged with violently assaulting Joseph and Elizabeth DIXON, at Newtown on Sunday the 28th ultimo. To find bail; committed in default. _______ Andrew MACKENZIE and John JOHNSTON, both of Lochmaben, were brought into custody on Monday, the 29th ultimo, charged with having used intimidation (and also assaulted Mr. Robert FORRESTER, of Syke Head, in the parish of Stapleton) in order to obtain alms. Committed to two months with hard labour each. |
